Blonde Turtle Shells were brought back by sailors in the 18th and 19th century. The actual Shell material or 'Skutes' were removed. Then on the long journey home, sailors would polish the carapace underneath for hundreds of hours until reaching a high sheen. The result is of such beauty that natural history collectors have prized them ever since.
