The Amur leopard is the worlds rarest big cat, found only in the Primorye region of South-eastern Russia and the Jilin Province of Northeast China. The wild population is estimated at less than 50 individuals. Most Amur leopards in captivity are part of a managed conservation breeding program. The individual to which this skeleton belonged was part of the global stud book, and sired many cubs during his long life. Born in Finland in 1992 to pure bred parents, by 2008 he was showing signs of arthritis and his eyesight was beginning to fail. Under constant veterinary care, it was eventually found necessary for him to be euthanized. By this time he was 18 years old making him the oldest, rare big cat in the world
