Taxidermy Wompoo Fruit Pigeon

Taxidermy Wompoo Fruit Pigeon

SOLD

Latin: Ptilinopus magnificus

Size: approx. 46cm x 53.5cm x 22cm

Description: As impressive as its Latin name suggests, this member of the species is set in a minimalistic box case to show off its beauty without any distraction. Although no makers name is attached to the original 19th century glass-fronted case, the style of display is undoubtedly influenced by the school of taxidermists who once operated in the north east of England, and is exemplified by men such as Joseph Cullingford and Robert Duncan.

Wompoo Fruit Pigeons feed off fruit-bearing trees in rainforests such as figs. Extensive studies in Papua New Guinnea suggests that they can swallow 2cm round fruit whole.
