Description: There are many different species in the pheasant family, most of which originate from the Himalayas, south east Asia, or China. Most conform to the general body shape of our own ring-necked pheasant although the colour of plumage and patterns is very different and usually very spectacular. Lady Amherst's pheasant is one of the more dramatic looking pheasants and was named for Lady Sarah Amherst, wife of the Governor of Bengal who in 1828 sent the first specimens to Europe from Asia. Since that time it has become a popular captive exotic species that is sometimes seen in parks and gardens.
