Taxidermy. A Greater Bird of Paradise in Display

SOLD

Latin: Paradisaea apoda

Size: Approx. 59cm x 81cm x 30cm

Description: The scientific name of the Greater Bird of Paradise is Paradisea apoda which means 'the footless bird of paradise'. This name was given as something of a scientific joke intended to highlight the fact that the first bird of paradise specimens to arrive in Europe entirely lacked feet. This was because the traditional methods of preservation used by the natives of New Guinea required the removal of feet in order to facilitate the drying process. Unlike the original specimens this example does, of course, have its feet and is shown in full display.
