Latin: Serinus canaria forma domestica

Size: approx. 28.5cm x 24cm x 19cm

Description: The taxidermy firm founded by Peter Spicer were famous for the great skill of their productions and the wonderful dioramas they constructed with evocative painted scene backgrounds to these dioramas. Very occasionally, however, they produced cases with glass fronts, backs, sides, and tops. This example houses a Gloucester fancy canary and this individual was probably once a highly prized pet. The expense incurred by commissioning Spicers to do the work of stuffing makes it almost certain that this was the case. Canaries were, of course, once very popular as cage birds.
